After 33 hours, the standoff in Lower Paxton Township has peacefully come to a close and both hostages have been found safe, according to police.
The gunman, 36-year-old Derrick Hutcherson, was barricaded after a shooting incident inside a home in Dauphin County since Monday at around noon.
Police say they were able to resolve the situation without firing a single shot, although they say Hutcherson fired multiple times at negotiators Tuesday afternoon and evening.
“[For] those 33 hours multiple shots were fired at our officers, thankfully, none of them were struck that took grave restraint for us to be dealing with that,” said Lower Paxton, Public Safety Director, Adam Kosheba.
CBS 21 News obtained court documents where police identified the gunman as Hutcherson.
Several 911 calls were made Monday afternoon for a report of gunshots near the 5300 block of Manayunk Road.
According to the affidavit, an officer found a 25-year-old woman with a gunshot wound and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police say the woman told the officer that Hutcherson shot her and that he was the father of her 2-year-old child.
Hutcherson then barricaded himself inside a home at Pennswood Apartments, holding the child and an elderly woman hostage.
The suspect and victim are in a relationship and share a child together, according to police. The residence in which the suspect is barricaded belongs to the victim.
Police say a witness reported Hutcherson later posted a live video on Facebook after the shooting. An officer confirmed reviewing the video and observing Hutcherson "confessing to shooting his son's mother," according to the affidavit.
During a Tuesday evening press conference, Kosheba, District Attorney Francis Chardo, along with other officials detailed the 30 plus hour standoff Hutcherson used both the 2-year-old child and 69-year-old grandmother as human shields to avoid capture; proceeding to fire at officers throughout the afternoon and into the night.
Authorities shared that no officers and first responders were harmed, but said as nightfall neared on Tuesday and with the suspect unwilling to cooperate –authorities sent tactic teams into the apartment a dangerous but successful hostage rescue.
Kosheba praising officers' efforts.
“Patience, patience, patience, and ultimately what we had to decide in this is incident is having to decide for a hostage rescue, and in this particular case that many hours later, all our options were gone."
During the conference Chardo providing an update on the woman’s injuries – as of Tuesday evening she was in emergency care after losing her eye from that gunshot.
Hutcherson is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, unlawful restraint, possession of a firearm and recklessly endangering, according to the affidavit.
He is currently being held in Dauphin County Prison on $3 million dollar bail. His preliminary hearing is set for July 7 at 2:30 p.m.
“This was an incredible team effort that resulted in his arrest without injury to any of the hostages to him or any police officer," Chardo said.
Police also said that residents who were displaced during the standoff may return to their homes.
