Ebensburg's old stone jail sold, will become 'multi-use' hub instead of being demolished
CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — The historic old stone jail in Ebensburg has been sold, officials announced Monday.
The Cambria County Commissioners said in a release that the historic structure has been acquired by DSherwoodD Enterprises.
They said the ownership was transferred from Cambria County and the Redevelopment Authority of Cambria County to DSherwoodD Enterprises Jan. 31.
"The Redevelopment Authority of Cambria County has been working with Mr. [David] Davis on this project since the fall of 2019. We are very excited for this multi-use facility and proud to have been a small part of this project. Mr. Davis' vision for this property utilizes the building's historic nature, while also bringing updated economic development options to downtown Ebensburg,” said Renée K Daly, Executive Director Redevelopment Authority of Cambria County.
The stone jail located at the corner of North Center and West Sample streets housed prisoners since its establishment in 1872 until 1997.
It's since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been featured on multiple ghost-hunting television shows including “Destination Fear” and “Paranormal Lockdown.”
Officials say they always had plans to repurpose the facility rather than tearing it down.
Cleanup and repairs are scheduled to start this summer before the property is restored into a “multi-use facility.”
“Teamwork with Cambria County, Ebensburg Borough, the Redevelopment Authority and Mr. David S. Davis is getting things done and it continues the winning atmosphere,” said Cambria County Commissioner Thomas Chernisky. “Cambria County does not have to demolish the old prison. We are looking forward to Mr. Davis’ vision of revitalizing this property. This benefits the taxpayers, the local economy, the county and the region. We are looking forward to the old prison becoming a hub in the heart of Ebensburg.”
