Family pushes for answers in shooting death of 12-year-old boy

Justice for Kain. The family of 12-year-old Kain Heiland is demanding action by the York County District Attorney one month after he was gunned down in Red Lion.

“Kain was one of the best kids,” said Kain’s grandmother Linda Arvin.

A life cut short. A case that remains wide open.

“I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a bad dream, because there was no reason for it,” said Arvin.

Today marks 32 days since 12-year-old Kain Heiland was shot and killed in Red Lion. Court documents point the finger at a 13-year-old red lion boy but no movement or charges in the case.

“Someone needs to answer for this and there is no doubt who it is,” Arvin said.

Since his death, Arvin describes the situation as a living hell. Big brother to three siblings, Kain’s personality and smile is sorely missed, a gaping hole never to be filled.

“He would have been a great man and important to a lot of people,” she said.

And if the loss is not difficult enough, the unknown of the case is driving a wedge in the community. Justice for Kain signs fly high across York County. The family and community are calling for closure.

“We want something to be done. We want charges to be made. We want someone to be held accountable and they know who it is that did this,” Arvin said.

Right now, the District Attorney’s office is simply saying this is “an ongoing investigation.” Arvin attempted to meet with the DA on Monday but that meeting was declined.

It’s my understanding that the District Attorney is planning a meeting with Kain’s parents at the end of the week to update them on the status of the case.

If you are interested in helping with the ongoing costs associated with Kain's death, a GoFundMe has been started and the money will go towards the family.
