STATE COLLEGE -- Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, which is performing in concert Monday night at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center, has been playing here since the 1970s.

A former Centre County magistrate -- Keith Bierly -- remembers when Bruce and the band ended up in his courtroom 40 years ago this month.

That's when Springsteen's tour manager got into a scuffle with university police and was charged.

To resolve it, they needed to see a magistrate. But there was no one on duty that night in State College, so Bruce and the band ended up in Centre Hall.

It was the middle of the night, but word got out. The phone started ringing.

While waiting for police and an attorney to work out the issue, Bierly and Springsteen talked for nearly three hours.

Bierly said Springsteen was polite and inquisitive, and even asked if he was appointed or had to run for office.
