The Greater Johnstown Water Authority officially approved buying the city’s sewer system Thursday evening.

June 23, the Johnstown City Council unanimously agreed to sell the sewer system for $24 million, plus the assumption of $63 million in debt, to the GJWA.

City officials say the money received for the sewer system will be used for things like city pensions, road repairs, and blight.

As part of the agreement, the water authority can’t raise sewer rates for three years.
