JOHNSTOWN -- The search for a new police chief in the city of Johnstown is all but over.

City manager Arch Liston told 6 News Wednesday that state police Lt. Robert Johnson will be appointed to the post and will start at the end of June.

Johnson, 48, is a Johnstown native and a Ferndale Area High School graduate.

He has been with the state police for more 25 years and is currently assigned to the Greensburg barracks as criminal investigation section commander for Troop A.

Johnson previously was assigned as station commander at the Bedford and Chambersburg barracks.

He also worked out of Carlisle and Hollidaysburg and served on the Bureau of Emergency and Special Operations.

Liston said he talked to city council during a private executive session at the last meeting.

He said all that's left is for council to vote and approve a contract for Johnson at the June meeting.

Johnson is married to 6 News anchor Jen Johnson.
