Laurel Arts dance students have spread holiday cheer for 11 years

SOMERSET - Christmas is right around the corner and some Laurel Arts dance students are spreading holiday cheer as part of their 11th annual Christmas show.

It's a performance that's put together by students all while helping fellow students this holiday season.

And by the time the stage curtain closes, they help raise money for their fellow dance students.

The show is free but donations are accepted.

The scholarship fund benefits the dance students who may otherwise not be able to participate.

Students have spent weeks of rehearsing and getting ready for the annual Rhythms of Christmas show held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Somerset Area High School.

"We rehearse a lot and it takes time to think of all dances and choreograph it all,” said volunteer choreographer Madison Troy. "We get to choreograph our own dances. There are students [ages] 3 to 18 so you have to choreograph a dance that works for everybody."

Troy is one of the Seniors in charge of making this show come together for the big night.

From a little tap, and and even some ballet, each year students from the performance company at Laurel Arts volunteer to do this holiday show.

And in the meantime, they raise scholarship money for other students so they can continue to do what they love.

"Dance has really built my confidence and helped me meet a ton of people"

Senior Sharon Allgood helps choreograph the show being a scholarship recipient, she said dance has taught her the meaning of Christmas.

"I think it's kind of what you give is what you receive, so the more you help out you get it back," Allgood said.
