Ligonier Twp. man accused of punching, strangling woman prior to hours-long standoff
Westmoreland County, PA — Authorities in Westmoreland County say a Ligonier Township man is in custody following an hours-long standoff that began Sunday afternoon and ended early Monday morning.
Police say at approximately 4:15 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to a residence along Terrace Road for reports of a domestic disturbance.
Investigators say the victim told police that she had been physically assaulted by 47-year-old Thomas Crary.
Authorities say officers helped the victim safely exit the home, at which time she told police that Crary had allegedly punched her several times in the face.
Police say during the dispute, Crary also reportedly grabbed the woman and attempted to "throw her" over a second-story balcony before strangling her and causing her to lose consciousness.
Authorities say once the woman was out of the home, officers attempted to make contact with Crary and SERT was called in to assist.
Investigators say authorities utilized flash bangs, sirens and verbal commands, but were unsuccessful in making contact with Crary until approximately midnight.
Officials say at 1:30 a.m. Monday, Crary finally surrendered to police.
Authorities say he is charged with aggravated assault, strangulation, simple assault and reckless endangerment.
According to online court records, Crary was arraigned Monday morning and is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison, with his bail denied.
