Local chemical dipping company goes viral on TikTok as they restore cars

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Even if you don’t have an account, chances are you have probably heard of the social media platform, Tiktok.

Since its initial launch in 2016, TikTok has amassed a following of over 1 billion accounts.

Many of the accounts focus on what people do in their day-to-day lives and, for the guys over at 3S Chemicals LLC in Nanty Glo, have used the platform to share their process of chemical dipping cars to the public.

In the past few months, their videos have been viewed over 50 million times across several social media platforms but TikTok has been the most successful.

It all started when Trevor Maloy, restoration specialist at 3S Chemicals, took a video of what he was working on and posted it to the platform. Within hours, the video had gone viral and in a matter of weeks his account had gained over 590,000 followers.

6 News caught up with Ben Schultz, one of the owners of 3S Chemicals LLC, and asked why he thinks these videos have been so popular.

“One of our workers, Trevor Maloy, have been working here for several years and decided I’m going to just do a TikTok video of what I do during the day of him pressure washing off a car and it just blew up, seems to fit into that satisfaction of it’s very pleasing to watch,” Schultz said.

The complicated process of restoring the cars starts with an alkaline based dip, then it’s time to power wash, and finally, when all the pieces are cleaned up, they return the tubs to be coated in an acid basecoat to protect from rust and decay.

Schultz explains how their process differs from other companies that often use harsher chemicals to treat the cars:

“This actually use to be more widely used process however a lot of chemicals are not very friendly to the environment, so a lot of them got shut down by the DEP or regulations have changed, so it didn’t make financial sense to do the process,” Schultz said. “Whereas the chemicals we use, they are not to that degree”
