SFU 'cooperating' with investigation into alleged sexual assault at Loretto home
Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Cambria County District Attorney Greg Neugebauer confirmed to 6 News that the Saint Francis University is "fully cooperating" with the investigation into an alleged sexual assault that reportedly occurred inside the basement of a Loretto Borough home.
On Tuesday, Loretto Borough Police filed charges against 20-year-old Marcel Mami, of Frederick, Maryland, and 20-year-old Daunte White, of Wharton, New Jersey.
According to the affidavit, police began their investigation into the alleged assault last summer after receiving a "faxed referral" from an unnamed source.
Police say, according to the victim, Mami reportedly led her into the basement of the home where he and White allegedly forced her to perform sexual acts.
According to the Saint Francis online roster, both Mami and White appear to be members of the Saint Francis Red Flash football team, however, neither the university nor police would directly confirm their association to the school or the athletic department.
6 News has attempted to contact the Loretto Borough Police Department, as well as the university, numerous times.
Saint Francis denied our request to interview anyone associated with the athletic department and, as of Thursday afternoon, we have not yet heard back from police.
"University personnel cannot comment on details of an ongoing investigation. Saint Francis University cooperates with law enforcement officials as needed," a university spokesperson said in a statement.
Meanwhile, 6 News visited the Saint Francis University campus on Thursday as several students and community members have reached out to express their "displeasure" with how the school and the police department have handled the investigation.
According to social media posts, the students have reportedly organized an on-campus protest for next Tuesday, January 31st.
“It coming out now really affects this campus a lot and all the women here, and I’m feeling for them and I’m kind of glad that they are doing this protest because it means a lot," one student said.
According to online court records, White has since been bailed out while Mami is still being housed at the Cambria County Prison.
6 News also reached out to the commissioner of the Northeast Conference, the NCAA athletic conference that Saint Francis is a member of, but have not yet received a response.
