State College Borough reverses decision to demolish local building following outpouring of support f

State College, PA (WJAC) — State College Borough is going back on its decision to put a parking garage in place of local businesses.
6 News attended Monday night’s council meeting where a number of people showed up to support the businesses in question.
Monday’s council meeting was filled with people in support of the Brewery, Music Mart and the rest of the local businesses at risk.
The borough council heard from residents and decided to vote again on the resolution.
Last week, State College Borough Council proposed a new parking garage downtown.
It was to be located on East Beaver Avenue, where the Brewery, Music Mart and other local businesses have been for decades.
The decision upset a lot of local residents. The Music Mart owner said none of the tenants, nor the building owners, were notified in advance.
One State College resident talked about the importance of the reputation of these businesses.
“If you go to any big city, you will see remainders of the old town. These are the things people come back to again and again, these old memories. The difference between us and these cities, we don’t have as many.”
We also heard from someone who proposed at the Brewery, as well as from a band member who said he owes his life to the bar. One resident talked about how it is more than just another bar downtown.
“When I came home, the Brewery was there. They really showed me what you’re seeing today and that is the Brewery has fostered a family in State College.”
The council voted against their previous decision after seeing and hearing all the support.
“Over the past two weeks, the borough has received adverse comments about the acquisition of the H-I-N building. Given the concerns raised, the staff recommends that the council vote at this meeting to rescind resolution number 1365.”
The council made it clear that the parking issue downtown is still a question that needs to be answered.
They said they will now look at other areas for the proposed parking garage.
